J. Thomas Dutro, Jr.

Dr. Dutro, scientist emeritus with the U.S. Geological Survey, retired in 1994 after nearly half-a-century of geological and biostratigraphic research, mainly in Alaska and the northwestern United States. He was educated at Oberlin College and Yale University, earning a BA from the former in 1948 and MS and Ph.D. degrees from Yale in 1950 and 1953. He also received an honorary D.Sc. from Denison University in 1993. Tom was awarded the Department of Interior Distinguished Service Award in 1996 and its Meritorious Service Award in 1983. He is an enthusiastic supporter of paleontologic research, public outreach, and scientific editing. He has been active as Trustee and President of the Paleontological Research Institution; Board Member and President of the Association of Earth Science Editors; President of the AAAS (Pacific Division); Chairman of GSA's History of Geology Division; and Secretary-Treasurer of AGI, among others. Recently he was been acting as biostratigraphic advisor to a circum-Pacific Working Group that is assembling a stratigraphic digital data base covering 14 east Asian countries.
